The Los Angeles Rams could receive a major defensive boost in Week 7, as NFL insider Ian Rapoport reports that defensive star Myles Garrett is likely to return to the field. Garrett’s potential availability would provide a significant lift for a Rams team that is 2-3 and facing another midseason “must-win” stretch.
Garrett’s knee issue initially began causing
problems during training camp, creating uncertainty surrounding his availability and ability to perform at his usual level. Although the veteran defensive end has continued working toward a return, the lingering issue has complicated his path back to full strength. The Rams have taken a cautious approach to his recovery, prioritizing his long-term health rather than rushing him back before he is ready. Even though the decision came late, after the team’s week 1 loss to San Francisco, it was the right decision as the team pursues a Super Bowl with the combination of Myles Garrett and Aaron Donald.
Garrett’s return timeline became clearer this week when Rapoport discussed the situation during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show. According to Rapoport, Garrett was given a recovery timeline of approximately six weeks following knee surgery. With the procedure taking place the Monday after the season opener, Week 7 represents a realistic target for his return. However, head coach Sean McVay indicated that Garrett would not return to practice this week, leaving some uncertainty surrounding the exact timetable.
Although Week 7 remains the most recent update, the Rams will need to ensure Garrett is “return to performance” not just “return to play”. The team needs the Myles Garrett they acquired, not a version that is playing with limitations or at a limited capacity.
