Bayern Munich clinched their 35th Bundesliga title by virtue of a 4-2 win over VfB Stuttgart in front of their home fans at the Allianz Arena. Four consecutive goals from Raphael Guerreiro, Nicolas Jackson, Alphonso Davies, and Harry Kane undid Chris Führich’s 21st minute goal and there was hardly anything Jonas Urbig could do to keep out Chema Andrés’ 88th minute half volley struck with the outside of his boot.
It was a luxury for Vincent Kompany to make several changes to the starting lineup from
the side that beat Real Madrid 4-3 midweek without disrupting the winning momentum of the squad. He also has eyes on the DFB-Pokal semifinals vs Bayer Leverkusen this week and the Champions League semifinals vs Paris Saint-Germain to come.
As such, Jamal Musiala was in the starting lineup and completed 45 mins in the title-clinching win over Stuttgart as both Lennart Karl and Serge Gnabry are out injured. Musiala teed up Guerreiro for Bayern’s first goal and was perhaps a bit unlucky not to find the back of the net himself. Still, it was a solid first half from Musiala, a player who’s season experienced a long-term delay after his freak injury at the FIFA Club World Cup over the summer.
After the final whistle vs. Stuttgart, Musiala said clinching the Bundesliga title was a “big moment” for Bayern in a season where there’s still two more trophies to be won. “This is a big moment for us. From the first friendly of pre-season, everyone in the team showed the same energy, same hunger, same mentality, regardless of the opponent – which has brought us here. We have to continue this way,” he enthused (via @iMiaSanMia).
To ease any sort of concern there may have been when it was seen that Musiala did not come out for the start of the second half, Bayern’s number 10 also confirmed that the halftime sub was very much planned with the upcoming matches in mind. “The substitution was planned. The coach said I would come off at halftime and get a rest. My foot is doing much better,” he confirmed (via @iMiaSanMia).
There’s no Bundesliga title party planned with the Leverkusen clash coming so soon after clinching the league and Kompany will also more than likely have to start Musiala again with Karl and Gnabry out. He did not want to take any unnecessary risks, regardless of how the win over Stuttgart panned out — it was an added bonus for Kompany that Bayern were in such control by the halftime interval.
