WBC interim Super Welterweight champion, Vergil Ortiz Jr., retained his strap last night with a masterful performance and finish over Erickson Lubin in the second round of their title fight inside Dickies
Arena in Fort Worth, Texas to improve his overall record to 24-0 with 22 knockouts.
Ortiz never gave Lubin — who was coming in with a 27-2 record — much of a chance to pop off any offense. In round two, Ortiz had “The Hammer” up against the ropes and started firing off one big shot after another. Initially it seemed as if Lubin was blocking most shots but he was, in fact, hurt, as the referee stepped in to put an end to the fight. Once Ortiz backed off it was clear that Lubin was out on his feet.
Have another look:
After his successful title defense, Ortiz called in none other than Jarron “Boots” Ennis in for a staredown and challenged him to a much-anticipated showdown. Of course, “Boots” is one of the best boxers in the game today with a record of 35-0-1 and it he current IBF, WBA and The Ring Welterweight champion. He was last seen claiming the interim WBA Super Welterweight strap by knocking out Uisma Lima, last month (see it again here).
Check out the face off between the two men:
It only makes sense to book this fight next, now it remains to be seen if the responsible parties involved in getting it down can actually come to a fair agreement to five fight fans what the want.
