Serge Gnabry is a player that has been ruled out countless times, but is someone that always finds his way back to the conversation. However, at the current moment he hasn’t quite found his way back yet. After being substituted off at half-time against Serbia for Said El Mala, many were quick to assume that Jürgen Klopp did not like what he saw, and needed to make a change. According to reports though, that is not the case.
Kerry Hau reports that Serge Gnabry says his half time substitution was due
to workload management, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. It seems like the right choice for Klopp to make, despite Gnabry starting the match as the captain. Especially when you consider that talents like Lennart Karl and Said El Mala were on the bench, ready to play.
Coming off a long-term injury, the match against Serbia was his first time logging 45 minutes since April, and we should not judge his performances harshly. For Gnabry though, it must be frustrating to not be able to make a first impression to his new boss. At the end of the day, this was not a do or die match, and Klopp certainly made the right decision to manage his player’s injury. Let’s hope Gnabry is back to his best soon for both club and country.
