The Denver Broncos have announced that they have waived wide receiver Dane Key today.
Key arrived in Denver as an undrafted rookie free agent from Nebraska. He got a serious look in the preseason and made a few good plays. He is similar to Pat Bryant in playstyle and will need to lean on that in the NFL.
Key’s size, length, and toughness all line up with Head Coach Sean Payton’s archetype at the position. He is an experienced player who uses those traits to his advantage and is fantastic at contested
catches. During his collegiate career, he lined up primarily on the outside, but also saw a hefty dose (35-percent of career snaps) from the slot position. That outside-inside flexibility is something Payton has stated is valued at the position—similar to what we have seen from recent draft picks like Pat Bryant and Devaughn Vele.
Having his brother Devon Key on the roster helps his chances to stick with the team when they move to fill out their practice squad next week.
