Welcome to the Morning Commute
When Mizzou’s offensive coordinator position first opened up, I listed Chip Lindsey as one of my top choices. As did Matthew Gustafson (or at least, his listed potential options with connections to Drink.)
So when news broke a few days ago that Lindsey was trending toward being Mizzou’s new OC, I was pretty excited.
Of course, I should’ve known others wouldn’t be so thrilled. Thus is the life of a college football fan.
So, in honor of Mizzou hiring its new OC, I trolled around the internet to find my favorite and most insightful criticisms of Lindsey as a coach. Happy reading!
“This sucks. Chip is bad at his job” – Anonymous Rock M Staffer
Succinct. To the point. And they backed it up when I followed up with them!
“To the DCs of the SEC:
Inside zone, inside zone, screen pass, punt.
You’re welcome.“ – Dead_Inside50 (Reddit)
At least we’ll be consistent!
“This makes me happy because it certainly means Drink isn’t an option anymore and I certainly wasn’t interested in that happening…“ – jlhendo (Reddit)
Not sure why so many Michigan fans are parroting this line. Feels like they should worry about not having a scandal for at least 6 months before they start getting picky about coaches.
“…reading analysis on MGoBlog and listening to Butt and Gardner’s podcast it seems like Chip was fine and a lot of issues were due to Bryce not being able to read the defense well yet. There were many instances of well designed plays and WRs being wide open in the OSU game that Bryce never saw. Conversely, he was supposed to be a QB guru so not sure that reflects well on him either or if a lot of it was Bryce being so young and inexperienced.
Although the Oklahoma gameplan was pure dogshit.” – MattPatriciasFUPA (Reddit)
I like this one because it ends with a swear.
“Drinkwitz is a great coach, can’t wait to see what he does with Lindsey and be finally able to tell just how bad we were pulling the rug out from under him while he was here.” – FudgeTerrible (Reddit)
One of the common pieces of analysis I’m seeing is that Sherrone Moore spent a lot of the season undercutting Lindsey’s ideas by implementing his own idea for the offense. I suppose that’s part of the job at a high level, but at least there will be some more cohesion with Lindsey and Drinkwitz given their shared history.
Yesterday at Rock M and Rock M+
The Illini struggled when the Crimson Tide and Cornhuskers knocked down enough shots to pull them out of gaps, including their bigs, and limit three-point attempts. It also generates the kind of double-gaps and crossmatches Mitchell needs to get in a groove. And you won’t be surprised to learn that almost 60 percent of Mitchell’s buckets at the rim have come when Jacob Crews runs the wing, and Northweather plays the five.
I’m going to need the Tigers to finally show they can beat/compete with good teams before I get excited about this season. Doing it against Illinois would be something akin to a Christmas bonus.
“I could not be happier to have the opportunity to work with Eli Drinkwitz in Columbia,” Lindsey said. “What Coach Drinkwitz has done at Mizzou over that past six years is remarkable. You couple that with the commitment the University of Missouri has made to the football program, this is one of the most attractive coordinator jobs in the country.”
We’ve got more coverage and analysis of the hiring in the next week. Spoiler Alert: Some of our staff aren’t so happy with the choice.
Slaughter started the game white-hot, scoring Mizzou’s first 13 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting. She got into the paint early and often, and North Alabama couldn’t do much to contain her. Slaughter ended the first quarter with 16 points, three more than North Alabama’s entire team. She cooled off in the second quarter, scoring four points on 2-of-6 shooting, but Smith picked up the slack, scoring nine points in the second frame.
Conference play is just around the corner. Can Kellie Harper keep up the good momentum she has started with? Hopefully, Shannon Dowell’s injury doesn’t last into the new year.
- Over at Rock M+, the basketball team is already tracking potential portal options for next season, we’re debating the latest potential moves in the football coaching carousel, and our transfer portal tracker continues to add names.
