As you probably know, SLAM Magazine did a feature on incoming Duke freshman Deron Rippey recently.
that accompanies it.It’s pretty clear by now that his father, Deron Rippey Sr., is a huge part of his life in general, but a huge influence in his basketball development
Deron Sr. played for ECU in the mid ‘90s, and we think he was in Greenville when the bottom fell out of the Duke program in 1995 following Coach K’s severe back issues.
It fits a Duke pattern of recruiting players from
basketball families, and as you’ll see in the video, father and son work closely on his development.
At one point, his father calls out, telling him to focus on the fundamentals.
You get a good look at the Rippey family in general, as Deron’s mother and sister both appear in the video.
He just seems to be one of those guys that you would want to have on your team. His personality reminds one of Jared McCain’s to an extent. He seems very positive, and as you may have seen on X, his father is all-in on his kid being a Blue Devil.
Small detail: at one point, Deron is wearing a 2001 Duke national championship shirt. Presumably you can still get one somewhere, but it’s also possible that his dad had one in the closet. That would be extremely cool.
