Being a Cleveland Browns fan has rarely been easy, but that is also something that many of us have taken pride in over the years. It is easy to cheer for a quality team that competes for championships and doesn’t embarrass the fanbase. The Browns have done little of the former and a lot of the latter.
Every Cleveland fan has their favorite stupidity from their team. Drafting Johnny Manziel because a homeless person told Jimmy Haslam to. The online funeral for Swagger, the dog mascot, that included
an actual casket and his son in attendance. Not lining up the “Go Dawg Pound” banner correctly. The GM texting a coach during the game. Broadcasting explicit social media messages on the walls of Berea.
And those were mostly off-the-field decisions.
The trade for QB Deshaun Watson was a failure in every way, but it continues to put Browns fans in a position to receive national sympathy of some sort.
Unfortunately, it seems like the Browns struggles to make good decisions and not embarrass fans have already rubbed off on HC Todd Monken. Cleveland’s new head coach missed the annual coaches’ picture at the NFL’s owners meeting because he got the time wrong and was trying to get a haircut. Not only did he miss the picture, but he skipped the coaches’ meeting prior so he could get his haircut:
Monken was actually getting a haircut expressly for Monday’s photo, which is supposed to feature the coaches from all 32 teams.
He thought he had it timed up perfectly, because the photo was scheduled for noon Pacific time. It was even written on the agenda that way.
The photo was snapped immediately after a coaches meeting, which let out early. The problem is, Monken skipped the meeting, in part to get the haircut.
Does Monken missing the picture matter? Of course not. Sean McVay also wasn’t there. The issue is that the Browns history is full of “LOL” moments at the expense of the team. Also, for Monken to share the reason he missed, and for it to be so simple and silly, just adds to the embarrassment.
Do you care at all about why Monken missed the picture? At this point, do you just expect silly, stupid and/or embarrassing decisions by the team or are you still surprised?
