The coaching carousel and staffing hires continue to work at breakneck speed with Ole Miss adding another coach to its ranks with wide receivers coach L’Damian Washington on Sunday night.
The 34-year old
coach comes to Ole Miss from Kentucky’s football program. Previously, he worked at South Florida and Oklahoma in the same capacity. It was reported Washington was the top choice for Mississippi State to replace Chad Bumphis as WR coach after he was fired in the offseason by Jeff Lebby. It looks like the Rebels swooped in and made the better offer for Washington’s services.
Washington originally hailed from Shreveport, La. and was a 2-star wide receiver prospect that ended up at Missouri where he earned a degree in psychology. From there, he bounced around in the NFL on several teams but ultimately ended up in coaching.
The prevailing opinion on the world wide web is that Washington is a rabid recruiter and evaluator of talent who should be able to help Ole Miss in its home and neighboring states. Ole Miss also announced former quarterback Micheal Spurlock is joining the staff in a offensive assistant/wide receiver role. A native of Indianola, Miss., Spurlock will add some of the authentic Mississippi and Ole Miss brand to the staff under Washington and new offensive coordinator John David Baker.
Pete Golding’s offensive staff continues to come together with some question as to Kevin Smith’s future as a running backs coach. There are also rumors about the possibility of LSU staffers Frank Wilson and Austin Thomas coming to Oxford. Wilson is a Louisiana recruiting legend especially in the New Orleans area while Thomas was previously on staff at Ole Miss as a football chief of staff from 2022-2023.
