While the Falcons fought valiantly in dire circumstances against Pittsburgh, the locker room had to be frustrated to fall short in a winnable game. Cooper Rush will attract all the headlines for his abysmal performance. Other subpar showings led to the team’s shortcomings, particularly from two players expected to be cornerstones at their
positions.
Matthew Bergeron and A.J. Terrell struggled with multiple penalties and were consistently beaten in individual matchups. Bergeron’s play didn’t resemble anything close to a guard making top-tier money. It didn’t matter who Terrell was covering on the outside.
He was a step behind often against DK Metcalf and Roman Wilson. Pittsburgh could have scored a touchdown and produced multiple explosive plays when targeting the veteran cornerback.
Questions should be raised about both players following their alarming performances. These are the games where teams with talent limitations need their key players to play at a high level. Losing matchups and being forced to commit desperate penalties won’t lead to wins.
Those mistakes cost Maason Smith a sack from a nasty inside move and an impressive effort from Drake London, where he ran through multiple defenders to produce a rare positive passing play.
