UNC poured it on early and often in their 91-75 win on the road against Georgia Tech. The Tar Heels scored 52 points in the first half and turned the ball over just twice behind big games from Caleb Wilson and Henri Veesaar. The Yellow Jackets led for just 26 seconds of the game.
Wilson was the Heels’ leading scorer with 22 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Veesaar managed foul trouble but finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Seth Trimble finished with 18 points and Luka Bogavac had 16 points off
the bench. Bogavac was the only Tar Heel to make more than one three-pointer with three. The game was such that Carolina only shot 12 free throws, but they made 11 of them. Free throw shooting has definitely been a point of contention this season, so it’s nice to see better numbers there even if they didn’t matter as much with the big lead. UNC had their biggest lead of the game, 21, with just under two minutes to go.
As good as Carolina was about not turning the ball over, Georgia Tech wasn’t as successful. They had 12 turnovers leading directly to 18 points for the Heels. The rebounding battle was nearly even with UNC having just one more than the Yellow Jackets, but UNC had 14 offensive rebounds and 20 second chance points. They also had 10 steals.
So many games lately have been extremely close, so it was nice to get one that never really felt in doubt. The Heels moved to 5-3 in conference play which currently puts them 3.5 games behind Duke with the first matchup with the Blue Devils coming next Saturday.
Carolina can’t get caught looking ahead to that game, though, as they have a date with Syracuse on Monday in Chapel Hill.
