Let’s just start with this: The New Orleans Pelicans are a cursed franchise that is seemingly incapable of having anything good happen to it. Every year in the Zion Williamson era, either he himself has
gotten hurt or they’ve been so hurt around him to where nothing else matters. Of course, option number three in that equation is that both of these things happen, which is often the case.
If we know these things to be true, then what exactly is going to make this season different? Well, there are no guarantees in life, and there certainly are none when it comes to the health of a team such as the Pelicans. However, with Zion Williamson coming into the year in noticeably better shape and a revamped group around him, it’s reasonable to expect better results than what was on court last season. Just how good this team can be is a far more interesting question.
New Orleans Pelicans: Over/Under 31.5 wins (-105/-115)
Last season: 21-61
Additions: Jordan Poole, Kevon looney, Jeremiah Fears (7th pick), Derik Queen (13th pick), Saddiq Bey
I suppose now is a good time to remind you that Pelicans GM Joe Dumars gave up an unprotected first round pick in next year’s draft to go get Derik Queen. Still, months later, the most baffling move of the whole draft.
Losses: CJ McCollum (Washington), Brandon Ingram (Toronto)
The Pelicans have no choice but to try and compete for a playoff spot this season. Time is running out on both Zion Williamson and coach Willie Green to get serious before the new front office decides to get out of that business. I also like Trey Murphy and Herb Jones a lot, and if both stay healthy the Pelicans will have no choice but to be better. Beyond all of that, I must remind you that JOE DUMARS TRADED THEIR FIRST ROUND PICK, UNPROTECTED, NEXT YEAR TO THE ATLANTA HAWKS JUST TO DRAFT DERIK QUEEN. Lots of seats on lots of heat! Better start winning, guys.
