UTSA entered Week 5 fresh off a 59-point outburst against Colorado State.
It marked the second-most points scored in program history. The most? That came last October, when the Roadrunners annihilated Rice in 61-13 fashion.
However, Rice — defending its newly-named First Community Stadium — ensured a much different story would be written in the rematch. The Owls gave UTSA all it could handle, but the favored Roadrunners got exactly what they wanted from their 200-mile road trip down I-10: a win. The score
was only 16-14, but it was enough to move UTSA to 1-0 in conference play.
“We just grinded it out,” UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor said. “Last week we couldn’t stop anybody, no one could stop us. This week, we’re the Purple People Eaters on defense, and on offense, we looked like an offense from the 70s as well. We weren’t that bad if you look at it. We did some good things. We just kept killing ourselves with a look of protection or a drop or a turnover at critical times. But our defense had such a great spirit, and our special teams was fantastic.”
UTSA scored 16 points across its first four drives. Three of those drives ended in Michael Petro field goals, while the other featured a 12-yard rushing touchdown by Will Henderson III, who finished with a team-high 90 yards as the Roadrunners’ most consistent source of offense. But UTSA failed to score a single point in the second half. The Roadrunners had a factory of explosive plays seven days prior against Colorado State, yet they could not break off a single play longer than 23 yards against the Owls.
“From the offensive side, we weren’t as ecstatic because we know we didn’t execute to our standard,” UTSA quarterback Owen McCown said. “But to start off conference play on the road at 1-0 is big time.”
Rice’s defensive front, led by true freshman Seth Clarke as he stepped in for the injured Chibby Nwajuaku, consistently pressured UTSA’s backfield and prevented passing plays from developing downfield. The Roadrunners averaged north of 35 points per game in non-conference play but managed just one touchdown against a relentless Rice defense.
“I’m proud of the defense,” Rice head coach Scott Abell said. “It was a great, great effort. I thought we showed a ton of grit. Obviously that made a difference for us. That’s exciting for us moving forward, and there’s a lot of football left. We’re a good football team. Nobody can convince me otherwise.”
Rice’s defense struggled the week prior at Fresno State, but one addition to the lineup helped change the Owls’ fortune. For the first time this season, fifth-year senior safety Daveon Hook suited up. Hook suffered a scary collison in the Armed Forces Bowl last January that left him immobilized on a stretcher and transported to a hospital. Saturday marked his first action since the terrifying injury. Not only did Hook record three tackles, but he also picked off UTSA right before halftime for the first interception of his career.
“I was actually anxious at first,” Hook said. “When I turn on the film, maybe I’ll see that, but as the game went on, I was looking left and right at those guys that spend a lot of time going through fall camp workouts with, and just being able to go out there and run to the ball — that just changed everything. It took all my anxiety away. It was a great feeling.”
Rice won the turnover battle 2-1 but never failed to score following either takeaway. But the Owls’ one giveaway was the most costly turnover all game. Rice fumbled deep in its own territory on the second snap of the game, and UTSA capitalized with a quick three points that ultimately proved to be the difference between a win and loss.
The Owls reached the end zone more often than the Roadrunners, with both Rice touchdowns coming courtesy of quarterback Jacurri Brown. Brown recorded his third-straight 90+ yard, 1+ touchdown rushing performance, thriving as the centerpiece of Rice’s option offense. Outside of using Brown’s mobility, moving the ball was a struggle for a Rice team missing several of its top offensive skill position players, including running back Quinton Jackson and slot receivers Davis Lane and Ben Grice, who suffered a first half injury.
“It is really tough when your explosive players aren’t on the field,” Abell said. “Maybe it kept us from getting in a rhythm. You start building momentum with certain guys, and next thing you know, you’re down those guys. So that’s not always easy.”
Trailing by two, Rice had two opportunities to stage the upset in the fourth quarter, but neither drive approached field goal range. The Owls punted from their own 37 on the first opportunity. Then, the latter series ended before it started, as UTSA linebackers Darion White and Camron Cooper both recorded sacks to quickly derail any hope of an Owl victory.
“It was a big burden lifted off our shoulders,” UTSA defensive end Jeremiah Bailey said. “Like the first four weeks without a sack, and finally getting a few of them tonight, it was kind of like, ‘Now, we’re alive. We’re feeling it.’”
Rice (1-4, 0-1 American) dropped its fourth consecutive game and has yet to defeat an FBS opponent this season. But after close calls against Western Michigan, Fresno State, and UTSA, Abell fully believes this year’s team is miles ahead of his 2025 Owls that finished 5-8. Rice will look to turn that belief into its first FBS victory next Saturday at East Carolina.
“We’re a better football team right now than we were last year at this time,” Abell said. “We’re playing really good football teams, we’re going toe-to-toe, and we’re coming up a little short. My job is to try to figure out how to get us over that hump.”
UTSA (4-1, 1-0 American) is 2-1 in road matchups this season after going 2-10 on the road from 2024-25. The Roadrunners didn’t exactly collect style points during their in-state trek to Houston, but they are perfect in the American standings and off to their best start since 2021. Now, UTSA returns to the Alamodome on a short week, looking to improve to 2-0 when South Florida visits for a Thursday night primetime matchup on ESPN.
“My intention was to go on the bus, go home 4-1 and 1-0,” Traylor said. “I really think our crowd’s gonna show up Thursday. I think it’s gonna be a wonderful environment. I’m excited about gameday. But this was a trap game from hell. We had cheese everywhere. We had the mousetraps everywhere.”
