Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer had to be subbed off around the 60th minute during their 5-1 thrashing of 1. FC Köln, with the goalkeeper pointing at his left leg during the substitution. After the game, the player was examined more closely, with the team stating that the injury was not serious. Nonetheless, the club announced that Neuer will not be taking part in Bayern’s DFB-Pokal final match against VfB Stuttgart on Saturday.
Bayern’s board member for sport Max Eberl spoke to Bild (as captured
by @iMiaSanMia) and explained that, while the outlook for Neuer’s injury is positive, Bayern decided not to risk making it worse by rushing him back for the final. He also stated that Neuer’s participation in the upcoming World Cup is not at risk, something that will surely give Bayern and Germany fans a sense of relief. “The World Cup is not in jeopardy, but he can’t play tomorrow. It’s simply too soon after the injury that happened on Saturday. Therefore, it makes no sense to put him in goal for the cup final with the risk of him seriously injuring himself,” said Eberl.
Eberl also took the opportunity to confirm that second goalkeeper and heir apparent Jonas Urbig will be manning the goal for the important showdown, where Bayern will work hard to achieve a domestic double. “That’s why we made this decision together, as difficult as it was for Manu to forgo the final. Jonas Urbig will now be in goal,” he concluded.
