Bayern Munich was unable to find a solution for defender Sacha Boey during the summer transfer window after the club had made it clear he was not in Vincent Kompany’s plans for this season. Throughout the summer window and during Bayern’s preseason preparations, the club’s front office had bluntly come out and said that all of Boey, Bryan Zaragoza, and João Palhinha were unwanted and not needed by the club, but Boey is the sole member of that trio that didn’t have a solution found. Palhinha went
to Benfica in Portugal and Zaragoza was loaned out to Espanyol.
For Boey, there was continued interest from Galatasaray, where he spent half a season on loan from Bayern last season, but they were unable to make a serious, permanent move for him. Boey’s wages and laws in Turkey restricting the number of foreign players in squads made it difficult for anything to wind up materializing. Fulham also showed some late interest in the defender toward the end of the transfer window and had opened direct talks with him, but Alvaro Arbeloa’s side could not make a move happen before the deadline that was suitable for all parties.
For now, with virtually all of the transfer markets across the globe closed, Boey is going to have to make do at Bayern for now, even if he’s a surplus to requirements.
After Bayern’s 5-0 win over Bodø/Glimt to kick off their Champions League campaign, board member for sport Max Eberl was asked about Boey’s situation in the mixed zone, and he more or less confirmed the defender is staying at the club for now. “Which markets are still open? Greece? He’s staying. That’s how it is. We’ll see what happens in winter,” Eberl stressed (via @iMiaSanMia).
Ideally, waiting until the winter window gives Bayern enough time to try to find a solution for Boey, but for the time being, Kompany can just view his presence in the squad as added depth in defense. Despite being in a tricky situation, the club has appreciated Boey remaining professional and not kicking up any sort of fuss or becoming a distraction to his teammates, but he will want to find a club where he can play regularly.
