To provide all-world quarterback Josh Allen with more help at wide receiver, Buffalo Bills president of football operations/general manager Brandon Beane went out and traded for DJ Moore. While Allen and Moore have a friendship going back to when they were rookies selected by the Bills and Carolina Panthers in the 2018 NFL Draft, they haven’t had a chance to develop their on-field chemistry until Buffalo began their Organized Team Activities (OTAs) this week.
With Allen and Moore having gone through
a few practice sessions together at the Bills’ team facility in Orchard Park, NY, today’s edition of Buffalo Rumblinks leads off by learning how Allen and Moore are using these offseason reps to get on the same page in the passing game, along with other observations from OTAs.
News and observations from OTAs
DJ Moore has caught 608 passes for 8,213 yards and 41 touchdowns so far during his eight seasons in the NFL. He is, by far, the most accomplished receiver Josh Allen has had since Stefon Diggs was in town, and OTAs are an important opportunity for Allen and Moore to figure out certain preferences, including how Moore runs different route patterns and where Allen will expect him to be on those pass plays when he targets Moore downfield.
How has it gone so far this week in establishing a rapport with his newest offensive weapon?
“You’re able to do more to see what works and what doesn’t,” Allen said. “Obviously we go out there, if we make mistakes, which is going to happen, chalk it up to the first couple days of OTA, and be like, ‘Hey, we like this, we don’t like this,’ and just again, continuing to work on it, and find ways that we can learn how to complement each other and build that chemistry and camaraderie.”
Among the other observations from OTAs: defensive lineman Michael Hoecht, who is working his way back from an Achilles injury, is looking good in his efforts to return to the team in time for the start of training camp; second-year cornerback Maxwell Hairston made a few big plays going up against Buffalo’s best receivers; new pass rusher Bradley Chubb dominated his 11-on-11 reps; defensive tackle DeWayne Carter made a few impressive plays; tight end Dalton Kincaid says this is the “best I’ve felt in my career;” and Walker and fellow defensive lineman TJ Sanders are poised for breakout seasons this year.
