to take on the WR2 role in Philly. He’s done a nice job of getting open and he’s made some tough contested catches as well. Wicks has had some struggles with drops in the past (nine in 2024) but that hasn’t been an issue for him so far in camp (knock on wood).

Dontayvion Wicks is expected to take on a key role following the trade of A.J. Brown. He has been a productive receiver through his first three NFL seasons, averaging 1.60 yards per route run. Wicks has also added value as a run blocker, earning PFF run-blocking grades above 65.0 in two of the past three seasons. That ability should help him stay on the field for an Eagles offense that ranked 11th in the NFL with 478 rushing attempts last season.

Justin Herbert was in the same draft class as Hurts and has been to the playoffs three times. He’s 0-3 with 2 TDs, 4 INTs, a 64.7 QB rating, and in his last two playoff games the Chargers scored a grant total of 15 points. He’s 6th?! And Hurts is 17? If you think Herbert is just a more talented player, then, eh, OK. But how is there that big a gap? But whatever.

Cooper is proving in camp that he is capable of more, especially in the absence of Smith and Lemon, who have missed practice time this week with hamstring injuries. But Cooper said he still takes pride in that dirty-work role, and he also expressed an understanding that his coaches will require those responsibilities of him if he wants a spot on the team. “Still got to do the dirty work,” Cooper said. “Got to block on the perimeter. Still got to have that mentality on special teams as well. I’m in the same mindset. Nothing is changing for me.” That mindset isn’t changing because the chip on Cooper’s shoulder hasn’t disappeared. He wasn’t highly recruited as a quarterback coming out of Hazelwood West High School just outside of his native St. Louis. He switched to receiver at Tarleton State, a FCS program in Stephenville, Texas, and became the school’s all-time receiving leader with 3,185 yards in five years. Last year, Cooper became the 12th player from Tarleton State to make an NFL active roster, and the first since Colts and Texans outside linebacker E.J. Speed entered the league in 2019.

WELCOME TO THE TANK BIGSBY FAN CLUB: Tank Bigsby does something every day to remind everyone that he’s a legitimate NFL running back. Bigsby, who averaged 5.9 yards per carry in limited duty last year, is the perfect back-up to Saquon Barkley because he has the ability to go into a game cold and make plays off the bench. He’s even caught the ball well this summer, something he hasn’t really ever done. Bigsby had just 62 catches in 35 games at Auburn, and he has only 11 in 50 games in the NFL. He explained this. Week that he’s just never been asked to catch the ball out of the backfield. “During my career at Auburn, we just ran the ball. When and when I got with Doug Pederson in Jacksonville, just ran the ball. They used me as a running back, they didn’t use me on third down as much. So I feel like as opportunities come, we just take advantage of them and build off of them and show what you’re capable of doing.” This stat tells you everything you need to know about Bigsby: He had just 63 carries last year but 13 of them – over 20 percent – went for at least 10 yards. For the sake of comparison, Barkley had 10-yard gains on 28 of 280 carries – exactly 10 percent of his rushing attempts. Obviously nobody believes Bigsby should be RB1, but he’s one heck of a RB2. He’s also going into the final year of the four-year deal he signed with the Jaguars in 2023, and if he has another limited but productive season it will be interesting to see if there’s a team out there willing to pay Bigsby to play a larger role. But for now, the Eagles are lucky to have him, and remember Howie Roseman got him for a 5th-round pick.

Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who is responsible for starting this trend, called a lot of man coverage from two-high last season. An advantage to this is that you don’t give a quarterback a presnap indicator to go to his deep route. Back then, without disguise, a quarterback would be licking his chops as soon as he saw press coverage on the outside with one deep safety in the middle of the field. In this image, the Eagles showed two-high, but safety Reed Blankenship rotated down to cover the tight end in man-to-man coverage.

The competition at left tackle is officially over for apparently still going on for the Dallas Cowboys. Brian Schottenheimer said on Wednesday during an appearance on San Antonio’s Sports Star that Tyler Guyton has still not officially won the job. Earlier in the week there were reports that Schotty declared Guyton the winner already, but Schotty told San Antonio that what his point truly meant to be was that Nate Thomas had to play better for it to be a real competition. Schotty reiterated that on Thursday in his press conference before practice.
