Its been 14 years since the New York Giants were a championship team. That feels like an eternity to Giants fans, but it pales in comparison to the 53 years fans of the New York Knicks had to wait to see their team win a title. That, in turn, is still better than New Yorks’ other football teams.
The Jets haven’t won a Super Bowl since 1968, while the Buffalo Bills have been tortured brides maids since 1990 and had the misfortune to be a championship caliber team at the same time as Andy Reid got Patrick
Mahomes.
So in honor of the Knicks bringing a title back to the Big Apple for the first time since the Giants did so in 2012, we want to know: Which New York (football) team will win a championship first?
The Bills are on the cusp of a championship, and have been so since Josh Allen came into his own back in 2020. However, Mahomes will be back, and the Bills also have to deal with the Ravens and the AFC Champion Patriots in their own division. They also can’t overlook the Broncos, Chargers, Bengals, or Texans in a stout AFC.
Buffalo’s immediate future is also uncertain as their team is aging while they fired the head coach who got them there after he failed to capitalize on a postseason without the Chiefs.
The Jets are clearly at least two years away. They have a bunch of picks to add talent to a depleted roster, but need a quarterback before they’ll be able to do anything. They’re almost certainly targeting the 2027 draft to get their QB (unless they gamble on Brendan Sorsby). And all that’s before they have to contend with the Bills and the rest of the AFC’s heavyweights.
Finally, the Giants are somewhere in the middle. Whether they’re closer to the Bills than the Jets is a matter for debate, but not even the most black-pilled Giants fan would (in good faith) argue that the Jets are in a better spot and closer to contention. The Giants have a young quarterback they hope will grow into a Franchise player, as well as young and talented players at each of the cornerstone positions of offensive tackle, wide receiver, edge defender, and cornerback. There are questions elsewhere on the roster, but also promising players who can be long-term answers. Oh, and the Giants finally have an experienced coach who knows what it takes to win a Super Bowl.
The Giants’ road isn’t easy by any means, and it could be their biggest stumbling block. The NFC is home to the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, who figure to be a factor for years to come. The Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers may see their windows shrinking, but remain incredibly formidable. The Giants’ own division could take the crown from the NFC West as the toughest in the division if the Eagles resist fading while the Cowboys and Commanders ascend.
So with all that in mind, which of the New York football teams do you think will be the next to win a championship? Not necessarily that any will win this year, but simply who’s next?
