Bayern Munich board member and honorary president Uli Hoeneß confirmed just how far down the pecking order current head coach Vincent Kompany was during the last coaching search.
In the midst of an announcement that Thomas Tuchel would leave at the end of the 2023/24 season, the Bavarians were apparently scrambling left and right to find somebody — anybody to take the reigns. From Kicker, as noted by Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg:
🚨⤵️ Uli Hoeneß has now confirmed what we revealed at the
time – something hardly anyone believed. FC Bayern were very keen to appoint Oliver Glasner. There were negotiations. In Kicker, he says:
“He (Vincent Kompany) was the number four or five candidate we spoke to. I’m thinking of Julian Nagelsmann, Ralf Rangnick, Thomas Tuchel first, and also Oliver Glasner, who would have come if Crystal Palace had released him.” 🇦🇹
That was definitely a frenetic time at Bayern. It is interesting to learn just how close the Bavarians came to Glasner…but things worked out in the end.
