Last season, it was all about Pat Murphy’s Pocket Pancakes and other pocket snacks. Now, he’s getting away from snacks and moving to…pocket turtles? Well, technically a pocket tortoise, but pocket turtle has a better ring to it.
While Milwaukee’s Friday night game in Kansas City was rained out and rescheduled to a doubleheader on Saturday, Murph still met with Apple TV’s Tricia Whitaker and showed her the newest addition to the Brewer family: Bobby Jr. the tortoise.
“I got a special guest I want you
to meet today,” Murphy said in the video. “This is Bobby Jr., in honor of my friend Bobby Witt and his son, Bobby Jr. I didn’t want to pull out pancakes, so here we are. Now, we got pocket turtles.”
Murphy chose Bobby Witt Jr.’s name as an homage to Witt’s representation of the game, adding that he’s close with the Witt family.
Per Adam McCalvy, Murphy and the Brewers had been brainstorming ideas for what to pull out of his pocket for this interview, and Murphy decided on his way to the ballpark that it would be a turtle. Then, he had to figure out a way to acquire one at Kauffman Stadium. Barrett Paulson, a Royals’ visiting clubhouse staff member, went to John’s Exotic Pet Store roughly two miles from the stadium and bought a sulcata turtle with Murphy’s money.
A sulcata, as Paulson learned from a Google search back out in his truck, is not a turtle; it is a tortoise. The third-largest species of tortoise in the world, with the average male size growing to 170 pounds. They also live anywhere from 55-80 years.
