Attrition from last season’s Sweet Sixteen team continues to grow. Sophomore guard Joson Sanon entered the transfer portal on Wednesday, according to multiple reports.
Sanon joins an expanding list of Red Storm departures, becoming the fifth St. John’s player to hit the portal this offseason. March Madness hero Dylan Darling entered the portal shortly after European guard Quinn Ellis’s commitment yesterday, Sadiku Ibine Ayo and Imran Suljanovic landed at Iona and New Mexico, respectively, and Lefteris
Liotopoulos is still looking for his next destination.
A former five-star high school recruit from Fall River, Massachusetts, Sanon began his college career at Arizona State, averaging 11.9 points on 42.2% shooting and 36.9% from three as a freshman before he entered the transfer portal that offseason and committed to St. John’s.
The 6-foot-5 shooting guard had the potential to break out as an all-conference talent and place himself comfortably on NBA draft boards with the Red Storm, but he struggled with consistency and finding a clear role, coming off the bench in 23 of his 37 games. Sanon’s scoring average dropped to 7.9 points, and he only hit 33.8% from the field and 33.6% from three.
St. John’s is back to six scholarship players for the 2026-27 season following Sanon’s entry into the portal. Along with the newly-committed Ellis, the Johnnies will also have guards Ian Jackson, Kelvin Odih, Fotis Konstantinidis, and Casper Pohto returning next season.
