Gable Steveson is the best prospect to hit the heavyweight division in a really long time, but former UFC champion Daniel Cormier is concerned the former Olympic gold medalist could be slowed down by his
own coach.
Cormier isn’t the only former fighter who feels this way.
In case you didn’t know, Jon Jones is currently one of Steveson’s coaches. The heavyweight prospect has formed a close relationship with the UFC legend. Coach Jones has even promised a future world title for Steveson, who has already caught the eye of UFC CEO, Dana White. Steveson is only 2-0 in his young MMA career so he still needs some work before testing himself inside of the Octagon, but things are going swimmingly.
Cormier, who has a really bad past (and present) with Jones, doesn’t know if “Bones” is the best person to help coach Steveson into a future world champion. Jones certainly has the skill to be a champion himself, but his sketchy past makes him a difficult wagon to hitch to. So even though Cormier sees Steveson as a massive prospect in the heavyweight division he doesn’t know how far he can go if Jones is nearby.
“I believe [Gable Steveson] has a real chance to be a world champion… I do think there are some factors that may slow him down — his coach is Jon Jones,” said Cormier during a recent appearance on the Ariel Helwani Show.
“As long as he lets the other coaches coach him, yes. But if Jon is actually coaching him, I don’t know… I don’t even think Gable is ever going to fall into that trap of making those mistakes.”
Let us know if you agree with Cormier or if Jones is a suitable coach for Steveson!
