Tyrese Maxey will be an All-Star starter for the first time in February. VJ Edgecombe has been electric as a rookie and will be a Rising Star during All-Star festivities in a few weeks as well. Things are looking both good now and for the future when it comes to the Sixers’ backcourt, so much so that the duo will be front and center on the latest SLAM Magazine cover.
It’s perfect that Maxey and Edgecombe are donning the Sixers’ black throwback jerseys as well for the cover. I was certainly a little weary of bringing back those Allen Iverson-era uniforms this season. I loved them back in the day and I continue to do so now, but it felt a tad like a cheap ploy from the organization to suck fans back in with nostalgia. That may be true to a degree, but Maxey’s ascension to superstardom this year paired with Edgecombe already exceeding the expectations that come with being a top-three pick have given the Philadelphia fan base plenty to care about this season.
These issues of SLAM with Maxey and Edgecombe, or each of them solo, on the cover are available for purchase on the SLAM website. Additionally, SLAM is selling a whole host of merchandise featuring these various Maxey-Edgecombe covers, including tees, crewnecks and hoodies.
Here’s hoping that one day Maxey and Edgecombe can recreate this cover following an NBA Finals berth, perhaps with some hardware even making it into the picture for good measure.
