Happy Wednesday! Your Knicks (8-5) are back in action today, traveling westward for a 9:30 PM clash with the Dallas Mavericks (4-11).
After two hard-fought battles with the Miami Heat, the Knicks have a solid shot to win their first road game of the season tonight. They’re 0-4 on such occasions, and the absence of OG Anunoby certainly won’t make things easier.
The good news is that help is on the way.
That’s right. The Captain himself, Jalen Brunson, was upgraded to questionable in advance of tonight’s tilt. Obviously, it’d be great if he could suit up, but it’s an encouraging sign regardless. Brunson should be back on the court soon after missing two games with an ankle sprain.
It’ll be interesting to see what form the Knicks come out in. As mentioned, they’re still trying to get off the schneid playing away from MSG. Miles McBride, Jordan Clarkson, and Landry Shamet have all stepped up in big ways in expanded roles. Mikal Bridges and KAT have both looked comfortable being the guys. With or without JB, the Knicks should still be comfortable favorites heading into Dallas.
Why’s that? Well, the Dallas Mavericks have imploded on themselves just 15 short games into the year.
The injury bug has struck them hard already. Anthony Davis has only appeared in five games so far this year. Kyrie Irving hasn’t appeared in any at all. With their guys on the sideline, 2025 #1 overall pick Cooper Flagg has had an up-and-down start to his NBA career (though to his credit, it’s been more up as of late).
They’ve limped out of the gates to a 4-11 start, with guys like Moussa Cisse and Brandon Williams being thrust into starting roles at different points already.
According to NBA.com, they have the second-worst-rated offense in the league this year. Their defense is in the top five, but it just hasn’t translated into wins. Things will turn around, but the basketball gods have been unkind to the Mavs as of late.
It’ll be the Flagg show against New York tonight, and he’ll want to bring the heat just a little bit more knowing that he’s playing in front of the entire country on national television.
Prediction:
The Knicks should be in position to take home their first road win of the season tonight against a Mavs team that’s looked lost to start the year. If Brunson plays, I feel all the more confident saying that. If not, look for a guy like Deuce McBride or Landry Shamet to pick up some of the scoring. Knicks by 11.
