At Will Stein’s introductory press conference, right after he was named the head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats, there was a certain thing he pointed out about the quarterbacks he goes after and what he looks for.
“Everybody wants to look at height, weight, speed. That’s where you start — do they fit the measurables? At quarterback, it’s so much more than that. Do they have the mental makeup to be the toughest mfer on the field? And then processing ability, being extremely accurate.”
I’ll stop there:
The word accurate. Stein had extremely efficient quarterbacks during his time at Oregon, with Bo Nix in 2023 finishing the season with the highest single-season completion percentage in NCAA history.
Stein added, “If you’re not over 70% in high school, what makes you think you’re gonna be 70% in college?”
Well, Kentucky pledge Jake Nawrot just finished his regular season comfortably above that 70% mark and ended the regular season with ZERO interceptions.
His final regular-season stats were accumulated through eight games due to a team forfeiting one game against Nawrot’s Hersey High School. Through those games, he finished completing 72.1% of his passes for 2,192 yards and 31 passing touchdowns with zero interceptions.
In addition to an elite passing season, Nawrot ran for 69 yards, three touchdowns, and took only two sacks all year.
Kentucky fans have grown familiar with a quarterback who takes care of the ball and doesn’t put it in harm’s way, and his name is Kenny Minchey. To this point in the season, through seven games, Minchey just has one interception to his name.
Nawrot will be making another trip to Lexington this upcoming weekend for a visit as Kentucky welcomes the Vanderbilt Commodores to town in front of a sold-out Kroger Field.
