Florian Wirtz is still a great player. That much should not be in question.
But after watching him play for Jürgen Klopp’s Germany against Serbia, it is fair to wonder whether Wirtz needs a different environment at club level to truly unlock his full potential.
Against Serbia, Wirtz looked free. He constantly found pockets of space, demanded the ball, combined with his teammates, and attacked the defense with confidence. Wirtz did all of that while continuing to live up to the ‘#CardioKing’ moniker
given to him by Liverpool fans. Wirtz was all over the field offensively and defensively for the Germans.
Wirtz created chances, assisted Tom Bischof, and scored a brilliant goal of his own as Germany secured a 2-0 victory. Klopp’s system gave Wirtz the freedom to roam and make decisions rather than constantly forcing him into a specific position.
The contrast with Liverpool has been noticeable.
Wirtz has produced moments at Anfield, but he has struggled to consistently impose himself since his move from Bayer Leverkusen. He finished his first Liverpool season with seven goals and 10 assists in 49 games, while his current campaign has also started slowly. At the same time, it is important to acknowledge that he remained Liverpool’s most creative open-play player last season, so the numbers do not suggest he has simply forgotten how to play football.
Perhaps that is the real issue. Wirtz does not suddenly become a different player when he puts on a Germany shirt. The system around him changes.
Klopp himself stressed that attacking players need a functioning team around them, while Wirtz said after the Serbia game that the movement from his teammates made it much easier for him to perform.
That does not mean Wirtz has to leave Liverpool. It does mean the question is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore — if Liverpool cannot consistently put Wirtz in an environment where he can play with the freedom and confidence we saw for Germany, could a move eventually be what allows one of Europe’s most talented players to reach his absolute ceiling?
