In Friday’s ACC Action, UNC crushed NCCU 97-53 and Georgia nipped 92-87.
In Chapel Hill, it was really no contest. The Eagles had to deal with UNC’s huge front line and 6-10 Caleb Wilson had a big night
with 21 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 blocks. Henri Veesaar, 7-0, had 12 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists and 5 blocks. Jaren Stevenson had two blocks as well. Backup big man Zayden High, the 6-10 backup big man who is back from a mandated year off, had two more.
UNC had 14 blocks altogether, but that’s nowhere near the ACC single game record, which is apparently 20 by Wake Forest against Duke in 1997 – the Tim Duncan era, naturally.
Not surprisingly, NCCU shot just 27% from behind the line and 24% overall.
Not surprisingly, UNC just shot over Central. Wilson was 7-8 and Veesaar 4-5. As a whole, the Tar Heels hit 11-28 on threes (39%) and 30-55 (55%).
No offense to Central, but UNC is on a different level and this was basically a tune-up game and sounds like Carolina took full advantage.
Meanwhile, in Athens Georgia Tech pushed the Bulldogs, but Georgia ultimately prevailed. Blue Cain and Cal transfer Jeremiah Wilson each got 18. Freshman Jake Wilkins, who is already a viral sensation, scored just 6 points.
Georgia broke the game open in the second half with a 14-2 run from which Georgia Tech never fully recovered.
The Bulldogs limited star Tech freshman to 2-9 from the floor and just 7 points. Baye Ndongo had just 10 points.
All things considered, it isn’t a disastrous loss, other than being to a hated rival. This team has work to do and it needs experience. They’ll get better from this.
On Saturday, several games but the best might be Clemson at Georgetown and Butler at SMU.
