Bayern Munich’s goalkeeper Manuel Neuer became the oldest Bayer Munich player to appear in a UEFA Champions League, when Bayern defeated Chelsea 3-1 during the opening matchday of the 2025/26 season, surpassing Lothar Matthäus.
The Bayern captain was asked about this milestone after the game in an interview (via @iMiaSanMia), where he jokingly took jab at frequent Bayern critic Lotthar Matthäus.
“I hope I don’t look that old. Well, Lothar doesn’t look old, but I’m still trying to look fresh,” Neuer
remarked.
Neuer surpassed the record by appearing in a UCL game aged 39 years and 174 days, a mark previously held by Matthäus. The Bayern captain is displaying a remarkable level at the moment despite his age, and he will surely try to guide Bayern Munich for the UCL trophy this season.
Bayern Munich hosted Chelsea in one of the most intriguing matchups on the second round of Matchday 1 in the Champions League’s League Phase.
The Bavarians were able to tough out a rugged 3-1 victory in a match that was not all that pleasing to the eye. Harry Kane’s brace and an own goal from Chelsea paced Bayern Munich. While Chelsea did some good things (including a terrific first half counterattack for a goal), the Londoners did not have enough gas in the tank to keep up with the German powerhouse.
