Earlier this week, Olympic gold medalist and former two-time Heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was involved in a tragic car accident that claimed the lives of two passengers — his close friends and longtime trainers, Sina Ghami and Kevin Ayodele.
According to Sky News, Joshua was discharged from the hospital on Weds., Dec. 31, 2025, and is now recovering at home. Details regarding the nature of his injuries have not been publicly disclosed, though they were described as minor.
The driver involved
in the crash — who had been hired for the trip — was also treated at a hospital and released today. However, TMZ reports that the individual is now being sought by authorities after allegedly fleeing the scene of the fatal incident.
“He could be hit with reckless driving charges as a result of Monday’s incident,” TMZ reported. “The driver of the truck that Joshua’s SUV smashed into fled the scene immediately after the crash and is now being hunted down by officials.”
Meanwhile, The Guardian Nigeria cited preliminary findings suggesting a mechanical failure may have played a role in the accident.
“Preliminary investigations revealed a burst tyre was responsible for the accident in which two-time heavyweight champion Joshua survived but lost two close associates,” the outlet reported, adding that the front passenger-side tyre burst, causing the vehicle to lose control before colliding with a stationary truck.
In the days following the tragedy, an outpouring of support has emerged for the victims’ families. More than $180,000 has reportedly been raised in honor of Ayodele to help fund the construction of a mosque in his memory — a gesture reflecting the deep impact he had on those around him.
