Serge Gnabry could be getting very close to his long-awaited Bayern Munich comeback.
According to Bild, Gnabry completed a full training session on Monday and participated in all of the exercises with his teammates. After months on the sidelines following his adductor injury, this represents another significant step forward for the 31-year-old attacker.
Now, there is a real possibility that Gnabry could return to the squad for Bayern Munich’s Champions League opener against Bodø/Glimt on Thursday.
It would be a welcome boost for Vincent Kompany as Bayern Munich prepare for their first European match of the season.
Gnabry’s return would also give Kompany another attacking option at the No. 10 position. With Jamal Musiala having recently returned and Ismael Saibari brought in to bolster the position during the summer, adding Gnabry back into the mix gives Bayern Munich even more flexibility in how Kompany structures his attack.
The timing could be particularly useful. Bayern Munich have a demanding stretch of fixtures ahead, and having another experienced player capable of operating centrally or from the wing gives Kompany more opportunities to rotate his attacking players without sacrificing quality.
Of course, simply making the squad would be one thing. After such a long absence, expectations should remain measured, and a substitute appearance may be the sensible route back. Still, seeing Gnabry back in full team training is encouraging news for the Bavarians.
