The Packers will spend one of their Top 30 visits on Texas Tech edge rusher Romello Height, according to a report from NFL writer Ryan Fowler.
Height is a 6-foot-3, 239-pound pass rushing prospect who currently projects as a Day 2 pick in this year’s NFL draft. As of this writing, he’s number 83 on the NFL Mock Draft Database consensus big board, and he’s actually been falling on that board for some time.
Height’s career very much reflects the current reality of college football: players are going
to mvoe around quite a bit trying to find the exact right fit for their skills (and, just as likely, trying to find the best NIL payout they can). In six college seasons, Height lined up for four different programs, spending two years at Auburn, two at USC, and one each at Georgia Tech and Texas Tech, in that order.
All told, he appeared in 50 college games, collecting 16.5 sacks and 27 tackles for loss as an itinerant pass rusher.
Height’s best attribute is his athleticism. Though he didn’t complete the full range of athletic tests, he did enough to rack up a Relative Athletic Score of 8.82, the highlights of which were his 40-yard dash (4.64 seconds) and vertical leap (39 inches).
The downside to Height is obvious: as exciting as his athleticism appears, he’s certainly a bit on the small side for an edge. He’s listed at 6-foot-3, but measures about a quarter inch shorter than that. His listed weight of 239 pounds, meanwhile, would make him the lightest player on the Packers’ defensive front, putting him a pound short of the just-as-diminutive Collin Oliver.
The Packers seem to really like Oliver, so, injuries aside, it’s fair to ask whether they’d really want to add another undersized quarterback hunter to their pass rush group. If they do, Height certainly has put some good stuff on tape: he’s slippery, fast, and relentless chasing the passer.
