In this series, BFW looks back at all the members of the 2014 World Cup-winning Germany men’s national team — players and coaches — reflecting on their performance back then and checking in on where they are today. Today, we have Roman Weidenfeller.
Roman Weidenfeller’s role in 2014
Weidenfeller was Germany’s veteran backup goalkeeper behind Manuel Neuer. At 33, he was one of the oldest members of the squad and provided leadership and experience in the dressing room. He did not appear in a match during the tournament, but his presence
was valued by Joachim Löw, and he played an important supporting role behind Neuer and the goalkeeping group.
What is Roman Weidenfeller doing now?
Since retiring in 2018, Weidenfeller has remained heavily involved with Borussia Dortmund as an international brand ambassador. His role includes representing the club at events around the world, meeting supporters, sponsors, and media, and helping promote Dortmund internationally. He is also a regular football pundit and commentator in Germany.
Unlike many former players who move directly into coaching, Weidenfeller has focused on ambassadorial and media work, making him one of the most visible former members of Germany’s 2014 squad.
