Cody Rhodes is the new WWE champion and face of the company, so part of his job is to make the media rounds and convince the masses that next month’s WrestleMania 42 is a can’t miss event.
With that in mind, Complex Graps asked him that when WWE inevitably promotes WrestleMania 42 as the greatest one of all-time, why should fans buy the hype and decide to come out to the show this year more than ever.
Rhodes said he wants to give an answer that “doesn’t sound terrible when we look back at this and
it’s clickbaited all up.”
Let’s see how he did:
“We had our main event with CM Punk and Roman Reigns, and now we just got to myself versus Randy Orton as the other main event at WrestleMania. The matches that are coming together, Stephanie [Vaquer] and Liv [Morgan], what clearly looks like Jacob [Fatu] might be doing. You talked about Sami [Zayn]. I think you’re looking at a bell-to-bell Mania that’s the best it’s been….the type of stuff I grew up on, wrestling bell-to-bell.
And for people who come for all the grandeur and the spectacle that is WrestleMania, that’s all there too. I feel like I saw some names on a sheet of some potential guests that is really, really exciting for a WrestleMania, for me particularly.
But yeah, bell-to-bell, I think they’re gonna get one of the better Manias, if not the best Mania of all-time.”
Rhodes recently described WretleMania 42 as a “sleeper” event, and that’s partially because of all the great young WWE talent who will be featured on the show.
“I’d watch this WrestleMania for the potentials of a Je’Von [Evans], for the potentials of a Oba [Femi], for the potentials of a Kit Wilson, for the potentials of guys and girls who hopefully are sitting here in this chair between you two guys 10 years from now talking about main eventing a WrestleMania.”
Cody summarized his thoughts in the following way:
“People should come to WrestleMania 42 because more than ever the stakes are higher.”
Given all the reports and rumors about backstage chaos and/or panic in WWE regarding how long its taking to finalize the WrestleMania card, and the sluggish ticket sales for the event, I don’t think fan expectations for WrestleMania 42 are nearly as high as Rhodes.
He’s probably right about WrestleMania 42 at least being one of the better events in its history for match quality; I think today’s faster paced style generally blows the first 15 or so WrestleMania events out of the water. But it’s hard to get into the hype of WrestleMania 42 as an all-time great iteration when so much of the card is still not officially announced by WWE, with a little over one month to go until show time.
Do you buy Cody Rhodes’ argument that WrestleMania 42 is a can’t miss event because the stakes are higher than ever? Does the Kit Wilson name drop mean he actually has a chance to make the WrestleMania card and not get dumped into the Andre the Giant Battle Royal?
