In an interview with Sky Sports, FC Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski seemed a little upset that Harry Kane keeps getting closer and closer to his Bundesliga record of 41 goals in a single season. The former Bayern Munich striker managed the feat in the 2020-21 season, and at the time people thought it would stand for decades.
Right now, it looks like the record won’t even last a few months. Kane is scoring at a rate almost unprecedented in the league’s history. He is really gunning for that all time
record. So, the media finally asked Lewy what he thinks of the situation.
“Harry Kane is always scoring so many goals and he’s playing really good and he’s doing a great job,” said Lewandowski (via @iMiaSanMia). That’s a good statement. Then what he added next feels like sour grapes.
“And then I saw I did this in 29 games… if I played 34 games, I can only imagine I could even score more! Because of him, I can be more proud of my record now.”
Uh, okay? To be fair to Lewandowski, he did miss a chunk of the most crucial part of the season because of an injury. The fact that he still broke the record regardless shows how incredible he was in that season under Hansi Flick. He deserved the Ballon d’Or and more for what he did.
But pointing this out while Kane is making his own run at the record seems a little uncalled for. It belittles the Englishman’s achievement. Ironically, Kane himself just sustained a calf injury that will keep him out of the Gladbach game, so he won’t get all 34 games either.
FC Bayern fans will be praying that a repeat of Hansi’s second season does not happen, where the team crashed out of the Champions League on away goals to PSG, while Lewandowski was injured. Regardless of Lewandowski’s feelings, the team needs Kane fit and firing for the rest of the season.
