Our pal Bethany Peters runs marathons to help raise money for World Vision, an organization that helps ring clean water to people. Here’s an update on her plans. They’ve changed a bit, out of necessity, but the goal is still the same. Please consider supporting her!
The Chicago Marathon is just a few days away!
In the year 2024, I turned the big 5-0. My goal for my 50th year was two marathons: Berlin & Tokyo. This year is the 20th anniversary of Team World Vision. It is an honor for me to run alongside
my sisters and brothers for the same cause I’ve been running for the past six years. My goal this time is to reach $200,000 life time total impact for World Vision.
Now, running long distances, it’s never been a walk in the park for me. There’ve been hurdles, setbacks, and challenges along the way. But it was during the Hood to Coast relay in 2022 that something clicked. My knee, it was stiff, swollen, and I needed a teammate to bail me out. I asked myself, “If I can’t even keep my commitments in this race, something’s gotta change.”
So, on January 6, 2023, I went under the knife for a total knee replacement. The doctor’s words at my initial visit, “Your knee is too far gone,” sent shivers down my spine. But he meant it was too far gone for a partial replacement. Partials are for “young” patients, and my knee looked many years older than my age indicated. A total knee replacement was the path to my recovery.
Eight months of relentless physical therapy followed. I pushed my limits, reclaimed my strength, and though I really, really wanted to run in the Chicago marathon on my revitalized knee, I just can’t. It’s not ready.
Even though I’m not running this year, I’m still part of the race that matters most — the race for clean water. But the children whose lives have been transformed by safe, lasting water — remind me why I do this.
Together, we’ve already helped 3,920 kids experience that same joy. I’m just 80 children away from reaching my lifetime goal of 4,000.
