After a quiet spell for commitments for Ohio State women’s basketball, head coach Kevin McGuff’s side added the verbal commitment of its second 2027 freshman. On Thursday, Brush High School guard Tatiana Mason announced her decision to join the Buckeyes on social media.
Mason is a 5-foot-10 combo guard who can score, rebound, and assist. On Jan. 10, the high school junior had a triple-double with
25 points, 13 rebounds, and 13 assists in an 84-62 victory over the then-No. 5-ranked team in the state of Ohio, Toledo’s Anthony Wayne High School.
In an interview with Cleveland.com, Mason compared her game to former Ohio State forward Cotie McMahon, who now plays for the Ole Miss Rebels. Mason went on to say that the reason she chose the Buckeyes was because of McMahon’s game and getting the freedom to play in McGuff’s fast-paced system.
A finalist for the 2025 Ms. Basketball Ohio honor, Mason’s goal is to win the award before her time in high school is complete. If she does achieve that honor, it would create a family tradition. Mason’s dad, 2000 Mr. Basketball Ohio Chester “Chet” Mason, was on the Cleveland Cavaliers roster in 2017 but mainly played international professional basketball for over nine years. Since 2015, Mason has coached Brush High School, including Tatiana and her younger sister, sophomore Nylah. The Mason family has Brush High School competing at the highest level in the state of Ohio.
This season, Tatiana Mason averages 25 points, 11.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 3.3 steals per game for Brush, which sits at a 12-4 record.
The 5-foot-10 guard out of Lyndhurst, Ohio, a suburb east of Cleveland, joined guard Myella Chapman out of Oakland, California, as the second commitment of the 2027 freshman class and only third player committed to the program over the next two seasons; guard Atlee Vanesko is in the class of 2026.
