Newcastle United’s preseason took another turn Wednesday night with a 4-1 defeat to Bristol City, but more than the result, it was Eddie Howe’s post-match comments about captain Bruno Guimaraes which generated more concern.
The Brazilian is due back from his extended World Cup break on Friday as Arsenal continues pushing to reach an agreement with Newcastle over a summer transfer for the Magpies captain.
Speaking after the defeat, Howe admitted the situation is no longer entirely in Newcastle’s hands.
“We’re not in control of that. And to some degree, I don’t think Bruno’s in control of that either. What will be, will be. We can’t control the forces that are at play here,” Howe said. “We’ve just got to make sure that when Bruno comes back, we look after him and he trains well, which I’m sure he will do. And he makes a difference as he always has done.”
Howe was asked whether he had sought assurances from Guimaraes about staying at St. James’ Park, and he couldn’t guarantee Bruno’s future lies in Tyneside.
“We’ve spoken numerous times. Assurances? I don’t think you can push too hard for those,” Howe said. “I’ve said many times we want players who are committed, and Bruno has always been committed. His training performances and his game performances have been outstanding, every time he’s worn the shirt, he’s played with the fans by his side. I’d love to see that continue.”
Howe’s comments come as Arsenal reportedly edges closer to an agreement for the midfielder. According to ESPN Brasil’s Bruno Andrade, Arsenal has submitted an improved offer worth £75 million, consisting of £70 million guaranteed plus £5 million in bonuses. Meanwhile, Newcastle sources continue to insist no formal club-to-club offer has been received.
Whether Bruno stays or goes, the club is above any and every individual, and that’s why Howe’s final comment is the most worrying, let alone after going through something similar last summer throughout the whole Alexander Isak saga.
“Any distraction, if it’s not healthy, is unhealthy. So, yeah, but we’re not in control of that,” Howe said.
