Bayern Munich is taking extra precautions ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash with Viking FK, with sporting director Max Eberl explaining why the club will hold its final training session in Stavanger.
The Norwegian side’s artificial playing surface presents a different challenge for Vincent Kompany’s squad, which typically plays on natural grass. Rather than leave the adjustment until matchday, Bayern has opted to travel early enough to familiarize themselves with the conditions.
Eberl acknowledged
that artificial turf can influence how a match plays out, making preparation on the actual surface a sensible decision for the German giants.
“The artificial turf is a big factor in why we’re holding our final training session in Stavanger. Normally, you play on natural grass pitches 99% of the time. I’m not saying it’s a different game, but the conditions are certainly different than on regular pitches. Therefore, it only makes sense for us to fly there and hold our final training session there,” Eberl said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
For Bayern Munich, the decision is about minimizing the number of surprises when the team takes the field. The ball can behave differently on artificial turf, and players must adjust to the surface’s feel and pace.
With Champions League points on the line, Bayern Munich hopes the extra preparation will help the team settle quickly and prevent unfamiliar conditions from becoming an unwanted storyline.
