AUSTIN, Texas — On Saturday, a college football universe desperate for some game action turned its attention to the Forty Acres after the Texas Longhorns social media team posted an incredible one-handed catch by junior wide receiver Cam Coleman from Friday’s practice.
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian was just as impressed as everyone else.
“That was a crazy catch, man,” Sarkisian said. “I don’t know. I tried to check his gloves —
I thought it was the old school stickum on there. That was a heck of a play.”
The catch showcased one of the top skills for the projected t0p-10 selection in the 2027 NFL Draft.
“I think that’s one of his strengths, right? Everybody’s got strengths and weaknesses in their game, and one of his strengths is his catch radius. But beyond that, it’s the balance and body control,” Sarkisian said.
“There’s a lot of tall receivers with long arms, but it’s his ability to have the right balance and body control and timing on balls because you can have a high pass, but to time your jump, to contort your body, and then to have the ability to make a catch like that, I just think speaks to the catch radius, but also the the body control to to to make those types of plays, and then the the hands, right? I mean, you have to have the ability to catch it, too.”
And while the Longhorns head coach generally avoids making player comparisons, but was willing to make an exception on Monday when asked about the elite catch radius of Coleman, offering a lofty comparison to an NFL star he coached as the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons.
“Julio Jones at Atlanta,” Sarkisian said. “Julio was similar that way, had that ability to go high point those balls the way that he does and still be a vertical threat. Like, Cam can still run — he’s not a possession guy, he can run, and Julio was that way.”
