Commanders receiver and primary return man Jaylin Lane has suffered an ankle injury that will end his season, head coach Dan Quinn announced during his Monday press conference.
Lane suffered what Quinn considered a “serious” injury during Sunday’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts, where it was obvious that he would not return to the game or to football in any capacity in the near future. Lane dealt with a dislocation and a fracture of the ankle.
The fourth-round NFL draft pick has been one of the best
return men since entering the league, with two punt return touchdowns during his rookie season in 2025. He was a special team stallion but lightly used on the offensive end both in this season and the last one.
Even still, his loss is a significant one that will hold weight over the campaign. It’s fair to expect that Luke McCaffrey will take over returning kicks and punts from now on through the end of the year.
That also means that McCaffrey will be active when he has not in recent weeks, allowing for his inclusion in the offense.
