Max Eberl’s future at Bayern Munich has gone from a question mark to a foregone conclusion, and according to honorary president Uli Hoeneß, the board member for sport earned that turnaround by changing how he operates inside the club.
Speaking to Sport1 (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Hoeneß explained that Eberl has become much more communicative with Bayern Munich’s supervisory board over the past six months. That apparently made a significant difference after Eberl had previously been viewed as something
of an outsider within the club’s leadership structure.
“I think Max has opened up much more within the club over the past six months. All of us — Karl-Heinz and I, and of course Herbert Hainer as well – have been kept much better informed by him about everything than was previously the case. Before that, he was a bit of a loner, so to speak. We didn’t like that. But he has fundamentally changed that. In that respect, he has done a great job,” said Hoeneß.
That change in communication apparently went hand-in-hand with Eberl’s work in the summer transfer window.
Hoeneß said Eberl’s chances of receiving a new contract had initially been around 60-40, but ultimately climbed to 100% after the sporting director followed the club’s recommendations regarding the timing of transfers and the overall budget.
“He implemented our suggestion at 100%: to sign the players as early as possible because they could become more expensive after the World Cup. He also came in under the budget we had set – we wanted to invest up to around €50 million (net spend). I think we ultimately invested only €30 million because almost €70 million came in through player sales. So, I think a very good job was done,” Hoeneß stated.
That last part is particularly significant. Bayern Munich’s leadership wasn’t simply looking for Eberl to spend money and improve the squad. The expectation was apparently to get business done early while keeping the club’s finances under control.
And, according to Hoeneß, Eberl checked both boxes.
The comments also provide an interesting glimpse into how much Eberl’s relationship with Bayern’s leadership has apparently evolved. Whatever concerns existed about his communication style, Hoeneß believes Eberl has addressed them — and the combination of improved internal communication and a successful transfer window appears to have changed the conversation surrounding his future entirely.
60-40 to 100%.
