Three points, another difficult away fixture successfully navigated, and plenty of reasons for Bayern Munich to leave Mainz feeling good about the afternoon. Still, Aaron Danks would have preferred one small addition to the final result — a clean sheet.
The interim head coach was pleased with how Bayern handled the challenge, particularly during periods when Mainz threatened to build momentum through set pieces and deliveries into the penalty area.
Danks acknowledged that Mainz is never an easy place
to visit, pointing to the atmosphere, the home crowd, and the work done by the opposition coaching staff and players. Bayern had to weather a few difficult spells, but ultimately stood firm and got the job done.
“We’re really pleased to come away with a victory. We’re a little disappointed to concede the goal at the end. A clean sheet would have been important for us. But we know when we come here, we’re in for a difficult game. The crowd, the atmosphere, the work the coaching staff do and the players, it’s always a difficult challenge for us. We had to suffer little moments of momentum where they had lots of set pieces and put balls into our box, but I thought overall we showed up and we stood up to that quite well. So, we’ll leave positive and happy that we’ve got the win,” said Danks (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
The clean sheet escaped Bayern, but the three points did not. Given the schedule and the challenges ahead, that is certainly something to build on.
