Bayern Munich’s Luis Díaz hit the ground running on his official debut for Bayern Munich. The Colombian winger scored his first goal in Bayern colors against VfB Stuttgart to win his new club the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.
After scoring, Díaz paid tribute to his old Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota, who passed away with his brother André Silva in a tragic car accident last month, by copying his signature “gamer” celebration.
“It’s brutal. The fact that he’s no longer with us and that we’ve lost an incredible
teammate is unbelievable. No one is prepared to receive this kind of news. He was a great teammate to me. We will remember him fondly,” said Díaz to ESPN. “He will live on in our memories, and being able to dedicate the goal to him is something special. I had planned to do so.”
Díaz had initially come under heavy criticism for missing Jota’s funeral service to attend an influencer party in his home country of Colombia. He eventually showed up at the church where the service was held a few days later, along with former Liverpool colleague Alisson Becker.
