Rolly Romero had very little to say in the immediate post-fight interview with Chris Mannix following his decision loss to Teofimo Lopez over the weekend, but despite storming out of the ring during that segment Rolly did appear for the post-fight press conference where he was largely bewildered with the scoring in the fight, believing he won clearly and convincingly.
“Look at my face. I got hit with, what, two clean shots the whole fight,” Romero said. “So, I mean, if that’s enough to beat the champion,
that’s enough to beat the champion. I’ve hurt him multiple times. I’m owed a rematch, for sure I’m owed a rematch and yeah, congratulations to Teofimo.
“He’s never hurt me at any given moment. He got hurt multiple times throughout the fight. Every time I threw a shot, I landed it. He couldn’t land anything clean on me and it was clear and apparent.”
Rolly was then asked about Teo’s consistent body work that had his side looking bright red during the fight.
“He didn’t land any of them. It was blocked with an elbow…Red where?” Rolly would ask as he lifted up his shirt, showing the redness having faded despite some clear abrasions around his ribs. “He didn’t land a single shot. You guys could clearly see he didn’t land a single shot.”
Soon after Rolly would be asked if he had any regrets with how he performed in the ring.
“When somebody else does this, it’s a masterclass. When I do it, it’s self explanatory, right? It’s all political.”
When then asked about whether he could’ve done more down the stretch of the fight to give himself a better chance on the cards, Rolly said this.
“I could’ve pressed more, of course. Anyone can. But championship fights like this, they’re always close, especially with two high level fighters. But he was hurt multiple times. One of the shots honestly should’ve been counted as a knockdown but, I mean, you know how it is. He survived, he knows how to survive. But I hit him so many times clean when I did, hurt him. Some of those rounds were for sure 10-8 rounds.”
