Bayern Munich Frauen’s Giulia Gwinn has successfully undergone shoulder surgery and will be sidelined for the time being.
The Germany captain had dislocated her shoulder in her last international match, the return leg against Austria of the World Cup qualifiers. Gwinn was able to play in most of Bayern’s remaining games of the season, and successfully so. She was an integral part of the team that went invincible in the Bundesliga and won the Pokal as well. She even scored the winning goal against Union
Berlin, the goal that sealed the Bundesliga title.
However, she did miss a couple of games as well, presumably due to pain and workload management. Now, the postponed shoulder operation has taken place, and Gwinn will be recovering while aiming a return for preseason.
Gwinn will thus miss the last round of World Cup qualifiers, which start next week. Germany has a home game against Norway in Cologne on the 5th of June, and an away game against Slovakia four days later. A win against Norway, who are currently second in the group, will see Germany qualify for the World Cup. A draw will suffice as long as Germany beat Slovakia.
Meanwhile, Bayern’s Franziska Kett has also dropped out of the Germany squad due to an undisclosed injury. The remaining Bayern players in the national team are Ena Mahmutovic, Linda Dallmann, and Klara Bühl, the latter of whom is set to make her first appearance in this year’s World Cup qualifiers.
