One of the funniest parts of the late John Feinstein’s “Forever Team,” which was about Duke’s 1978 joy ride to the national championship game, was about Scott Goetsch during the Notre Dame game.
Goetsch, who admirably backed up Mike Gminski, was agitated on the bench and, according to Feinstein, was rocking back and forth, saying “Laimbeer sucks! Laimbeer sucks!”
As soon as he got into the game, Goetsch took a shot away from the basket and pointed his finger at Laimbeer.
Both grew up in California and
Goetsch must have encountered Laimbeer enough to understand what the rest of the basketball world would eventually learn: Laimbeer was an unapologetically dirty player, possibly the dirtiest player in NBA history.

He clearly doesn’t care that he is reviled. Laimbeer carved out a long and successful career, winning two championships with the Detroit Pistons and making enough to live on for the rest of his life and beyond.
The rest of the world though?
No one likes Bill Laimbeer.
