Women’s Soccer (5-3-2)
The No. 18 women’s soccer team tied with Nebraska 1-1 on Thursday before falling to Wisconsin 2-1 on Sunday.
Penn State led for the entire second half against Nebraska until the Cornhuskers potted a goal
in the final minute of regulation off a corner kick. Kaitlyn MacBean scored the Nittany Lions’ only goal of the match.
Penn State outshot Wisconsin 7-2 in shots on goal, but the Badgers converted on both of their shots, while the Nittany Lions’ attack was stymied in the second half. Kaitlyn MacBean scored Penn State’s lone goal in the 7th minute.
The Nittany Lions will look to turn things around in Big Ten play with road games against Illinois tonight (8pm on Big Ten Plus) and Northwestern (2pm on Big Ten Plus).
Women’s Volleyball (6-4)
The No. 15 women’s volleyball team eked out a win over Princeton in five sets before easing past Central Michigan 3-0 in the Penn State Classic.
Kennedy Martin’s 29 kills helped the team overcome a sloppy performance on defense in the second and third sets against Princeton. Penn State had eight kills and zero errors in the decisive final set to win the match.
Caroline Jurevicius reached 10 kills and Kennedy Martin recorded 16 kills and 5 blocks against Central Michigan. As a team, PSU outblocked Central Michigan 8-3. The Nittany Lions won their second straight match to close out non-conference play with the Big Ten schedule looming.
Penn State opens Big Ten play with home matches against USC on Friday (8pm on Big Ten Plus) and UCLA on Sunday (noon on BTN).
Men’s Soccer (2-4-2)
The men’s soccer team turned in a dismal performance against Indiana in the Big Ten home opener, falling 4-1. Kai Phillip scored his first goal of the season to put Penn State on top 1-0 in the eighth minute, but it was all downhill from there for the Lions. Indiana scored three goals in the second half to pull away and doom Penn State’s upset bid.
The team rebounded to tie Maryland 2-2 on Tuesday. Christian Dionne scored a goal in the 85th minute to put Penn State ahead 2-1, but the Terrapins answered less than a minute later to tie the game and prevent the Lions from earning their first conference win of the season.
Penn State will take on Robert Morris at home on Tuesday (7pm on Big Ten Plus).
Field Hockey (4-3)
The field hockey team’s four-game winning streak came to an abrupt end with a 3-1 loss to Maryland and a 3-2 overtime loss to Lafayette.
Maryland dominated Penn State statistically and territorially for most of the game, outshooting the Lions 20-3 in the contest. Sophia Mannino scored the only goal of the game for Penn State in the closing minutes to prevent a shutout, but the Lions opened conference play with a loss.
Penn State led Lafayette 2-1 in the fourth quarter thanks to goals from Natalie Freeman and Morgan Snyder, but the Leopards tied the game in the final minute of regulation to force overtime. After a scoreless overtime, Lafayette won 2-0 on penalty shots to secure the win.
Penn State will look to rebound with a home game against Michigan State tomorrow (4pm on BTN) and a road game against Syracuse on Sunday (Noon on ESPN+).
