The Kansas City Chiefs began the second quarter facing a third down and three in the red zone. Travis Kelce would catch the ball just shy of the first down marker to bring up a fourth down, so they would go for it. They would pick it up easily down to the Denver Broncos six yard line for a first and goal.
Denver’s defense quickly got them into a third and goal from the five where they’d leave the running back wide open in the flat who ran it in easily for the touchdown.
Chiefs 7, Broncos 3.
Bo Nix and the Broncos settled in to start their next drive with a quick pass to Evan Engram on first down and an inside handoff to fullback Adam Prentice on second down for a quick first down. Things went downhill from there with Nix misfiring on third and eight on a pass to Courtland Sutton on another poor throw.
The Broncos defense would force a punt, but the special teams unit would commit a penalty on a touchback to pin the offense deep to start their next drive. They would get out of that shadow with two passes to Courtland Sutton, one being on third down. Nix would scrambled on the next third down with a 14-yard scramble out to their own 42-yard line.
Two plays later, Nix hit Marvin Mims Jr. on a screen who was able to turn it up field for a nice gain to pick up a first down just across midfield. The two minute warning would hit on a critical third and two at the Chiefs 39-yard line.
Jaleel McLaughlin broke through the line for a big gain down to the Chiefs 24-yard line for the longest gain of the day for Denver.
They would stall out after getting to the Chiefs 11-yard line and have to kick another field goal as the first half wound down.
Chiefs 7, Broncos 6.
