Five ranked teams — including two ranked in the Top-10 — lost in college football this weekend, leading to another week of madness in the AP Poll.
Losses for Penn State against UCLA and Texas against Florida were the headlines of the weekend, but that did not excuse the losses for Iowa State, Florida State and Vanderbilt, all of which either fell out of the rankings altogether or are hanging on by a thread.
It was certainly a good week for the Michigan Wolverines to pick up a key Big Ten win at home,
defeating the Wisconsin Badgers, 24-10, to rise from No. 20 to No. 15 with all the movement around them. As for Michigan’s upcoming opponent next weekend, USC just missed the AP Top-25, but the Trojans are coming off of a much-needed bye week and will have home-field advantage come Saturday.
Around the Big Ten, there was a ton of shakeup in both the AP Poll and conference standings. As previously mentioned, Penn State — which is now unranked — lost to an 0-4 UCLA program that had a new-look coaching staff with an interim head coach and two new coordinators. Meanwhile, the top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes handled business at home against Minnesota, and Illinois took down Purdue to move to No. 17. Penn State, Nebraska, USC and Washington all received votes to be ranked.
Around college football, the ACC had a nice day, as Virginia defeated Louisville in overtime to jump to No. 19, and Miami moved up to No. 2 after beating Florida State on the road. In addition, Alabama appears to have found a groove by notching a big win over Vanderbilt to move to No. 8. Texas A&M improved to 2-0 in SEC play and moved up to No. 5 with a home date against Florida next weekend, while Texas Tech allowed just one touchdown against an undefeated Houston squad to move up to No. 9.
