Last week Bayern Munich Honorary President, Uli Hoeneß, revealed that the obligation to buy in Nicolas Jackson’s contract would only be activated if the Senegalese striker “plays 40 games from the start.” The statement from Hoeneß came as a relief after the deal received widespread criticism, especially for the massive obligation fee.
New details provided by Philipp Kessler, Hanna Raif and Vinzent Tschirpke have since emerged over the obligation in Jackson’s contract and it turns out Hoeneß wasn’t
one hundred percent correct (via @iMiaSanMia). It turns out Jackson’s appearances are not only linked to starting appearances but also every time he plays 45 minutes, not including added time.
While the new details, in all likelihood, won’t change the outcome, it is an important distinguishment. There is a higher chance of Jackson playing over 45 minutes 40 times rather than starting 40 games. Nonetheless, since added time isn’t included, this means he would have to be subbed in at or before half time, which is also unlikely.
While the verdict is still very much out on Jackson’s loan move to Bayern, the new details that have emerged certainly make the deal look a lot less like desperation and being taken advantage of by Chelsea.
